Durden-Hudson Funeral Directors announces the death of Homer Sylvester “Chip” Durden, III, age 72, of Swainsboro, GA, on Saturday, September 19, 2020, at Meadows Park Health and Rehabilitation in Vidalia, GA.

Graveside Memorial services will be held at 2:00PM on Monday, September 21, 2020 at Swainsboro City Cemetery with Rev. David Unkles officiating.

The family will receive friends at the cemetery one hour prior to the service.

CDC social distancing guidelines will be observed and masks are encouraged for your safety and others.

Honorary Pallbearers will be the Swainsboro Kiwanis Club and The Wiregrass Chapter of the Sons of The American Revolution.

Homer S. “Chip” Durden, III was born in Augusta, Georgia. He was the son of Homer S. Durden, Jr. and Marion Little Durden. Chip grew up hunting and fishing and listening to the colorful tales of his Daddy and Bill Rountree.  His interest in the outdoors led him to scouting where he rose to the rank of Eagle.  As an adult he continued his work with scouts and received the Silver Beaver Award. Chip was employed by Dibrell Brothers Tobacco Company of Danville, Virginia and would travel the tobacco markets in Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, and Kentucky. Upon his retirement from the tobacco company, he operated Fast Go Oil & Lube until his health forced him to retire totally. He was a member of the Swainsboro Kiwanis Club and served as Georgia District Governor, Club President, and Lieutenant Governor.  He was also a member of the First Families of Georgia and was proud to tell you that his ancestor arrived in Georgia on the ship with Oglethorpe.  He was a member of Wiregrass Chapter SAR where he served as Secretary / Treasurer and was a past East Region Vice President for the Georgia Society.  He was also a member of National Society Magna Charta Barons and the Georgia Salzburger Society. Chip was a true gentleman and patriot.  He believed in serving his community and helping others.  He adored his wife of almost 47 years and his precious Shih Tzu, Anya.

Survivors Include:

Wife of 47 years: Jane Grier Durden

Sister: Marion Smith of Augusta, GA

Sister-In-Law, Jill Briercheck (Glenn) of Greensburg, Pennsylvania

Brother-In-Law, Tommy Grier (Jan) of Centennial, Colorado

From my family to your's, please except our condolences. Chip was a great friend and mentor to me. Our many discussions on Scouting and the workings of the Swainsboro Kiwanis, helped me be better at those positions I held. He was always there to assist and to guide. He will be missed.

It was a pleasure to know "Chip" Durden. He was a good man who met and overcame an unusual number of health challenges - but he could always be counted on to do his part in his community, civic and historical work. He will be missed.

Elaine and I wish to extend our sympathy and condolences to the Durden family. Chip was an inspiration to me as I sought to serve as Governor of the Georgia District. His example of commitment to Kiwanis and the Georgia District was at a level deserving of emulation. He leaves a void that only the memory of him can fill.

Jane, I am so sorry to learn of Chip's death. I miss seeing you since I am no longer able to attend the FFG meetings. I have moved to Marsh's Edge Retirement Home and I found the invitation to your wedding while i was sorting boxes of valuable collections. You probably won't remember that Bill and i attended your wedding! We were very fond of your in-laws.
Know that I will be thinking of you and praying for you as you adjust to life without Chip. You two have been such a positive influence on so many people and Chip will surely be missed by all those who knew him. You will be in my daily prayers. I love you,
Nancy Lanier
