Durden-Hudson Funeral Directors announces the death of Mrs. Greta Simmons, age 87, of Swainsboro, GA, on Tuesday, November 19, 2019, at Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro.

Funeral services will be Friday, November 22, 2019, at 11:00 AM in the Swainsboro First Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Harrell officiating.

Interment will follow in the Swainsboro City Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

Pallbearers are Wes Simmons, Joe Howard, Tripp Howard, Heath Simmons, Cody Collins, Joseph Howard, Craig Peebles, David Simmons and Henry Terwilliger.

Honorary Escorts will be the Caregivers of Mrs. Simmons.

Mrs. Simmons was born July 30, 1932 in Blundale, Emanuel County, GA to the late Joseph Milton and Delma Anglin Lumpkin. She loved her family and friends unconditionally. Her greatest love, her husband, Herbert Eugene Simmons and she loved to dance. She was tremendously kind and gracious and was known for her wonderful letters, notes, and cards she sent endlessly. She loved gardening, her flowers, and sharing them with others. She loved spending the holidays with her family and would cook and decorate for weeks. She managed the children’s shop at Dolores and Woody’s for over 30 years. People would come from miles around to shop there.  In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph Milton Lumpkin, Jr. and Walter Lumpkin.

Survivors include:

Husband of 70 years: Herbert Eugene Simmons of Swainsboro, GA

Daughter: Gennie S. Wright (Noel) of Isle of Hope, GA.

Sons: Clay Simmons (Sandi) of Birmingham AL and Bill Simmons (Marcie) of Swainsboro, GA

Grandchildren: Tripp Howard, Joe Howard, Wes Simmons, Jessica Collins, Heath Simmons, Rachel Hilton, Laura Simmons, David Simmons, Kelly Whitworth, and Megan Cobb.

Twenty-Two Great-Grandchildren

The family is very grateful for her many caregivers and the Ogeechee Area Hospice.

So sorry to hear about Greta. She was such a wonderful person and I always thought she was so pretty. She and Gene made a great couple and I know they loved each other as well. May God give all of you peace and comfort as you try to move on. May God bless all of you.

Gene, Bill and Jeanie, What a loss of such a fine and beautiful lady. She was always a favorite at D&Ws. She was always so gracious and friendly to all.
