Durden-Hudson Funeral Directors announces the death of Kathryn Ward Chatham Curl, age 78, on May 11, 2023, at the Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC.
A memorial graveside service will be conducted Sunday, September 1, 2024 at 2:00 PM at the Swainsboro City Cemetery with Pastor Wendy Durden officiating.
Interment will be in the Swainsboro City Cemetery following the service.
Kathryn was born on November 13, 1944 in Greenville, SC to Hayne Chatham and Sallie Ward. She graduated from Wade-Hampton High School in Greenville, SC in 1962. She earned degrees from Queens College, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the University of Pittsburgh. She taught highschool English in South and North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and New York State. After twenty-two years at Alfred-Almond Central School in New York, she retired and began a short career in Teacher Education at Alfred University. After moving to Asheville in 2007, she taught English part time at the local community college and at South College, a regional proprietary college. Also in her retirement, Kathryn devoted time to political and community organizations. She was also involved in community outreach programs such as All Souls Cathedral’s, “A Room at the Inn,” a shelter for at-risk women and was an on-air reader for the blind. In her downtime, she always enjoyed reading classic literature and working a good crossword puzzle. Her life was devoted to the education and enrichment of others, the betterment of society, and the wellbeing of her family.
At the time of her death, she was survived by her husband, Jim, who has since passed.

Grandchildren: Adrienne, Alex, and Allison.
Cousins: Bob Alexander and Chere Allard.
