Mrs. Davis was born in Covington County, Alabama on March 21, 1929, to the late Samuel Nelson and Ella Bryan Nelson. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 24 years, James Leon Davis.
She graduated in 1946 from Stromm High School in Andalusia, Alabama and went on to begin her college career at Troy State University. On February 19, 1950, she married James Leon Davis.
Mrs. Davis was a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was involved in her grandchildren lives and attended many ballgames, dance recitals, church and school related activities throughout the years. She will be remembered fondly for her recipes that she handed down. Still those recipes are the request of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The famous “chicken and rice” is requested at many homes today.
Mrs. Davis was a member of First Baptist Church and Agape Sunday School Class. While able to attend; she was faithful to her Lord, her church, and her Sunday School class. She looked forward to the community and blessings that this group provided. She actively connected with others who could not attend and provided friendship and encouragement.
She enjoyed her days as a wife and mother before returning to the work force. She worked in the office at Delores and Woody’s, then joined the office team at Walmart in Swainsboro when it first opened at the old location. “Miss Jean” served the store and the community well as personnel manager, meeting and creating friendships throughout the county. After 17 years of service, she retired from Walmart.
She was an avid fan of professional tennis, the Atlanta Braves, and the University of Alabama football team. She would fill you in on the pros and cons of the current teams and players and root the teams through winning and trying seasons. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, James Leon Davis, four sisters, and six brothers.
