Durden-Hudson Funeral Directors announces the death of Mr. Charles E. Whatley, age 78, of Swainsboro, GA, on Monday, August 23, 2021, at his home in Swainsboro, GA.

Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, August 26, 2021 at 3:00 PM at Sharon Memorial Gardens, 305 Arrowood Road, Tyrone, GA 30290 with Rev. Nick Hazelton officiating and Rev. Tom Tidwell assisting.

On behalf of the Whatley family and Durden-Hudson Funeral Directors, we ask that you please stay safe. Wearing a mask is not a requirement, however, it is our desire that everyone stays healthy and well. Please be mindful and careful during these trying times when attending services of  friends and loved ones. 

Charles was born in Fayetteville, Georgia to Angus Mac and Glennis Holt Whatley. He moved to Swainsboro in 1966 with Atlanta Gas and Light Company. He established the local office and was an office supervisor for thirteen years. Following the gas company, Charles worked and retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a rural route mail carrier for over 32 years and was recognized for his impeccable safety record and was a member of the “Million Mile Club”.  After retirement he worked as a pharmacy technician at Wal-mart in Swainsboro for ten years. Following Wal-mart, Charles enjoyed working as a driver for Daniels Chevrolet. Charles enjoyed hobbies such as fishing and coin collecting. He was an avid Georgia fan and enjoyed attending games and watching the dawgs play. His true passion was his family. He attended every event that his children and grandchildren were involved in, often traveling all over the state to support them. He was a softball coach at David Emanuel Academy from 1992 to 1996. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and was the church treasurer for 24 years. Charles was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Anna Leigh Wells.

Survivors Include:

Wife of 60 years: Ruth Virginia Mayfield Whatley

Daughters: Cathy Leigh Daniels (Ed) of Swainsboro, GA and Suzanne English (Joe) of Douglas, GA. 

Grandchildren: Jacob Andrew Westbrooks, Emma Suzanne Wells, Ethan Sutton Wells, Kaitlyn Suzanne, Kaidy English, Kristen English, Abby English, and Rachael Daniels.

Many Nieces, Nephews, and Extended Family.
