Durden-Hudson Funeral Directors announces the death of Mrs. Betty Jean Thompson, age 86, of Swainsboro, GA, on Sunday, August 19, 2018, at Emanuel Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 22, 2018, at 2:00 PM, at the Swainsboro First Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Leigh officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the Swainsboro City Cemetery.
Pallbearers are: Jerry Lawson, Jr., Lt. Steven Hucks, Hiram Bobo, Michael Gunn, Al L. Lawson, and Ashley Thompson.
Mrs. Thompson was born February 27, 1932, in Adrian, Emanuel County, GA, to the late Emmitt Eugene and Nellie Johnson Lawson. She was a native of Swainsboro, GA and graduated from Swainsboro High School in 1949. Mrs. Thompson was a graduate of The University of South Carolina with a BS degree in Business Education; she taught school in South Carolina and Georgia for 25 years, retiring with the Richmond County School system in Augusta, GA after twenty years. While attending the University of South Carolina, she was in Who’s Who among students in American Colleges, was voted Student of the year in 1975-76. She was a life member of Richmond County Retired Teachers Association, a life member of Georgia Retired Teachers Association, a member of National Business Association, a member of National Business Supervisor’s Association, was a Georgia Farm Bureau Member, a member of Emanuel County Retired Teachers Association, and served as Treasurer for many years. Mrs. Thompson was a member of the First Baptist Church in Swainsboro, a former Sunday School Teacher, a member of Trailblazers Sunday School Class, a member of Happy Rover’s, and a member of the Women’s Missionary Union. She held many other offices in the Sunday school and WMU. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Step-Father, Dobson Gay, a step-sister, Gwen Hughes, two brothers, Jerry Lawson, Sr. and Jack Lawson and a Step-Brother, Steven Gay.

Two Grandchildren: Kacy Hucks (Steven) of St. Marys, GA and Riley Thompson of Atlanta, GA
Two Great-Grandchildren: Haddy and Hunter Hucks of St. Marys, GA
