Agnes Ellis Obituary

Durden-Hudson Funeral Directors announces the death of Mrs. Agnes Sylvene Ellis who passed away on October 10, 2022, at the age of 93 after a brief illness.

Funeral service will be held at the Peebles-Curry Memorial Chapel in Swainsboro, Georgia on October 14, 2022, at 11:00AM with Rev. Jim Harrell, who Mrs. Ellis cherished, officiating.

A graveside memorial will follow at Eastbrook Cemetery in Swainsboro, Georgia.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Pallbearers are Bill Simmons, Josh Alexander, Adam Lowrey, and Donald Hall.

Mrs. Ellis was born on April 24, 1929, in Abbeville, South Carolina to the late Ollie Bonner and Iva Ruth Ellis. She married her husband, late John Harris Ellis, in 1947.

She graduated from Due-West High School in Due-West, South Carolina and attended Erskine College for clerical training the following year. In 1946 she began working at Riegel Textile in Ware Shoals, South Carolina until 1961. After moving to Georgia in 1965, she worked for the head office of Swainsboro Sportswear and then Advanced Metal until retiring.

Mrs. Ellis was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, (their Mema), and great-grandmother; who enjoyed spending her time with those around her. She filled her days by her husband’s side – accompanying him on their daily errands around town, tending the garden, and visiting with neighbors. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Swainsboro and the Agape Sunday School class for nearly 50 years. Once moving to Birmingham, Alabama in 2018, she found solace in writing letters and calling her Georgia and South Carolina family as often as she could. A long-time fan of the Atlanta Braves, many summer nights were filled with watching a Braves game with her family. She will forever be remembered for her sweet spirit and deep dedication to her faith.

Mrs. Ellis is preceded in death by her parents, Ollie Bonner and Iva Ruth Ellis; her husband of 71 years, John Harris Ellis; daughter, Harriett Deidra Ellis Bishop; siblings, Frank Ellis, Maggie Hannah, Bernice Fogle, and Jim Ellis.

Son: Bonner Timothy Ellis (Joy) of Flowery Branch, Georgia.

Daughter: Micki Ellis Hall (Donald) of Birmingham, Alabama.

Grandchildren: Lauren Ellis Alexander (Josh) of Marietta, Georgia, BriAnna Hall Lowrey (Adam) of Blountsville, Alabama, and Victoria Brooklyn Hall of Birmingham, Alabama. Great-grandchildren: Ava Taylor Lowrey, Ana Kathleen Lowrey, John Walker Lowrey, and Nolan Young Alexander.

Many wonderful nieces, nephews, and close friends who she treasured..

The family would like to thank her many doctors, Shelby Ridge, and the hospice team who dedicated themselves to Mrs. Ellis in her final days.
