Durden-Hudson Funeral Directors announces the death of Mrs. Velma Bishop Taylor, age 89, of Stephens Crossing near Summertown, GA on Friday, November 6, 2009, at the Emanuel Medical Center after an brief illness.
 
Funeral services will be Monday, November 9, 2009 at 11AM in the Bishop Chapel Baptist Church near Summertown, GA with Dr. Robert Blankenship officiating.
 
Interment will be in the Bishop Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.
 
Mrs. Velma will lie in state at Bishop Chapel Baptist Church one hour prior to the service.
 
The family will receive friends Sunday, November 8, 2009 at the Taylor Store and residence, at Stephens Crossing and Monday, November 9, 2009 following the service at the cemetery.
 
Pallbearers will be Christopher Chapman, Jon MacDonald, James Robert Matthews III, James Robert Matthews IV, Dickey Martin, Deal Shuman, Noah Shuman, Trent Taylor and Michael Tyler.
 
Mrs. Velma Jewel Bishop Taylor was born and lived her entire life in the Summertown community. After graduating from Summertown High School, she married her high school sweetheart, Henry Cardel Taylor and they opened and operated H. C. Taylor General Merchandise located at Stevens Crossing for Sixty-five years… She continued to operate the store after her husband’s death in 2005. She was preceded in death by her husband; Henry Cardel Taylor, her parents; William Horace and Ada Stroud Bishop. Also preceding her in death were her brothers; Harley Bishop, Jack Bishop (Rubye) and Allen Bishop, sisters; Cleo Bishop Culvers (Algie) and Ruby Bishop, brother-in-law; Guy Lawrence Taylor and son-in-law: Cay Guyton Stokes.
 
Survivors include:
 
Her Daughter: Barbara Ann Taylor Stokes of Swainsboro, GA.
 
Two Sons and Daughters-In-Law: Carl Henry Taylor (Nan) of Statesboro, GA., and Larry Cardel Taylor (Deborah) of St. Simons Island, GA.
 
Seven Grandchildren; Melissa Stokes Tyler (Michael) of Athens, GA, Elizabeth Stokes Matthews (James Robert III) of Barnesville, GA, Leslie Taylor Shuman of Statesboro, GA, Jill Taylor MacDonald (Jon) of Pinehurst, NC, Ashley Olivia Taylor of Statesboro, GA, Christopher Olan Chapman (Lauren) of Savannah, GA, Carla Patricia Chapman, St. Simons, GA and Trenton Cardel Taylor, St. Simons, GA.
 
Eight Great-Grandchildren: James Robert Matthews IV and Anna Elizabeth Matthews of Barnesville, GA, Amelia Ann Tyler of Athens, GA, Joshua David MacDonald and Jacob Kai MacDonald of Pinehurst, NC, Noah Taylor Shuman and Peyton Smith Shuman of Statesboro, GA, and Cailynn Lee Chapman of Savannah, GA.
 
Two Sisters-in-Law: Mrs. Lillian Bishop and Mrs. Sybil Taylor.
 
A Special friend and caregiver Susie Knighten.
