History

Our Beginnings

Durden-Hudson Funeral Directors; Peebles-Curry Memorial Chapel

Founded in 1966, Peebles-Curry Mortuary has been serving the families of Swainsboro, GA and Emanuel County at the same location, 206 East Pine Street, since its inception. Voted “Best Funeral Home” eleven years in a row by readers of the area’s local newspaper, Peebles-Curry Mortuary’s commitment is to the families we have had the honor of serving. We promise to provide a dignified funeral service, which meets and exceeds the expectation of families.

The Peebles-Curry Mortuary building is located in the center of town, one block off both US Highway 1 and US Highway 80. It is especially built for funeral service having an expansive chapel for seating, two private reposing rooms, a large arrangement office and coffee room.

In 1990, Peebles-Curry Mortuary underwent a major renovation. A large administrator’s and executive offices and state of the art embalming room were added. A comfortable arrangement office and new sound system was incorporated for funeral services. An open porch across the front of the building was glassed in to allow our customers a feel of the outside with the comfort of inside.

In 1998, a 100 car lighted parking area located adjacent of the funeral home was added to the facilities

In 2000, storm damage gave cause to the exterior of the building to be updated with paint and renovated with stately columns and lighting.

During the four decades of its operation it has been under the leadership of four executive officers: Bob Ray Peebles, Edmond and Myrtle Curry and J. Gary and Lois Curry, former president of The Georgia Funeral Directors Association. Wendell Durden served as manager from 1993-2007.

In July, 2007, Wendell Durden and Scott Hudson purchased Peebles-Curry Mortuary from Service Corporation International and it became Durden-Hudson Funeral Directors, Inc., Peebles-Curry Memorial Chapel honoring the time honored traditions of the original owners and founders.

The interior of the building is continually being renovated and re-decorated to keep operational as well as a pleasant appearance.

Our funeral home is represented by our staff in several civic club, fraternal and service organizations, including Masons, Shriners, Booster Clubs, to name a few. Our staff has served on local boards of Swainsboro Technical College Foundation Board and Emanuel Medical Center Authority Board.
